Moths are Here to Stay…

Many of us used to the night life,

We sustain ourselves daily on the edge of knife,

With a few ways for protection from predators,

We managed to save ourselves for many years,

All the attention went to butterflies who belong the same order,

We were ignored after all the hard work that we render,

Gaudy appearance and support of the bright sunlight,

Butterflies always enthralled human sight,

Many of us work as pollinators during night,

Some researchers thankfully revealed our prominence in nature staying under searchlight,

In the Lepidoptera order our diversity is immense,

We have some tricks under our sleeves for our defense,

Bats are our nemesis when we work in the darkness,

To find us echolocation is the ability they harness,

Jamming their signals is the ability many of us use to survive,

Camouflage also helps our species to thrive,

Most of our larva can create irritation

and itching if someone comes in contact with them,

Otherwise they are vulnerable to those who cause harm,

A few adults too cause irritation,

And some mimic those who are tasteless and bad for digestion,

As adults our main intention is to locate the mate,

Even if they were far away this is a task that can’t wait,

Our population is susceptible to boom and bust,

Nature has its own way to controlling us from proliferating without rest,

Using harmful chemicals senselessly can lead to our annihilation,

Another crisis that we face is the light pollution,

Artificial lights make us wander from our natural path,

By flattering around them without a break will lead some of us to death,

Destruction of viable habitats are destroying our population,

Grasslands, wetlands and various types of forests are some places that need well deserved protection from unregulated exploitation,

To explore more about the our value in ecosystem services,

Sharing this knowledge and creating more public awareness,

To make people recognize us are friends indeed,

Is a mission that requires more nature enthusiasts who are ready for this deed…
